This thesis project from designer and technologist Frederic Brodbeck “is about measuring and visualizing movie data in order to reveal the characteristics of films and to create a visual ‘fingerprint’ for them. Information such as the editing structure, color, speech or motion are extracted, analyzed and transformed into graphic representations so that movies can be seen as a whole and easily interpreted or compared side by side.”

The Nolitan Hotel, New York

Aug 19th, 2011

Exposed concrete; check. Retro fittings; check. Floor to ceiling windows; check. Super-cool branding; check… It may well be months behind schedule, but Nolita’s very own boutique/design/style/luxury (*delete where appropriate) hotel fits the bill on pretty much everything we adore about hotels. There’s sumptuous luxury, there’s du jour style, there’s indulgence and sophistication, and there’s the location; North Of Little Italy – bordered by SoHo, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Bowery and the Lower East Side – is definitely one of Manhattan’s hippest spots. The Nolitan Hotel is the latest in a long list of recent Manhattan hotel openings but it’s certainly one of our most anticipated, and the reality certainly lives up to that expectation; thanks, largely, to Grzywinski+Pons‘ über-chic design. From its crisp, urban architecture and staggering interiors that echo ‘the most stylish apartment you’ll never own’, through an endless list of quirky and very personal services – a long-overdue check-out time of 2pm, branded skateboards and doggie grooming, no less – The Nolitan is a neighbourhood hotel that is the personification of a ‘home away from home’. But, be careful, you may never, ever, ever want to leave…

At Summer’s End

Aug 18th, 2011

Early August, and the young butternut
is already dropping its leaves, the nuts
thud and ring on the tin roof,

the squirrels are everywhere.
Such richness! It means something to them
that this tree should seem so eager

to finish its business.
The voice softens, and word becomes air
the moment it is spoken. You finger the limp leaves.

Precisely to the degree that you have loved something:
a house, a woman, a bird, this tree, anything at all,
you are punished by time.

Like the tree,
I take myself by surprise.

“At Summer’s End” by John Engels, from Sinking Creek.

Happiness isn’t what happens when…

“Happiness isn’t what happens when you whistle along, pretending bad things don’t exist… Happiness is earned, like everything else. It’s achieved.” ~Marisa de los Santos
